Of course, USEP is known to be one of the competitive university not just in Davao but throughout the nation. The university is establishing a niche as a center for academic excellence in Mindanao - a reputation it has acquired through persistence and constancy of purpose in the pursuit of quality and excellence in all its undertakings. The University is achieving its goal to produce globally competitive and morally upright graduates.

May you give me any possible competitive company or working areas who's not particular in intelligence and proven excellence?? Of course, every company is looking for a competitive employee that fits on their competitive functions in an organization. And the best and tested strengths of these USEPians serves as the best example. Try to imagine yourselves USEPians particularly the ICeans. My co- ICeans, even from the very beginning, we have already experienced the feeling as being "sweet tortured (ika nga nila)". Tortured in a way that we could really get benefits. For all the hardship that a USEPian faced, the fact is, countless company would really be thirsty to have you.

I still remember the words that a fresh graduate students from our university under Institute of Computing department as he said, "Nag-apply ko sa company na akong ginatrabahuan karon ba, kasabay nako kay taga University of hmm, mas nauna gud siya sa akoa og apply pero ako ang nadawat".

See?? We must consider ourselves as a Blessed student to be part of this university because it's not really easy. Even the time we have used just to enroll in USEP.

But before going too far along the topic, we all know that being in this University under the Department of Institute of Computing, have you ever saw the letter posted at the IC LAB1?? goodness!! How could we, ICeans be a competitor if even our own school won't allow us to use any electricity especially in using laptops??

But for me, if a student is really good, even without using those said electronic devices, he/she could really learn because of being determined. Being practical, salary assurance is what everyone is looking forward, and since we're talking anout the job, perhaps someday Iwould practice more on developing my skills in order to interact on such fields.
CHILL!!

The Green Campus Computing

The Green Campus Computing

"Center works to safely dispose of e-waste"

"The U's Green Computing Resource Center helps ensure that electronic dinosaurs, now known as e-waste, stay out of the landfill, and is addressing a host of other environmental issues created by the vast array of technological hardware and processes at the U.

Using a thumb-drive in place of burning a CD, utilizing network connections for data transfer instead of other media and simply turning off a machine or monitor when you're done with it are all steps that save energy and resources.

In the bigger view, Reich and others involved with the group are looking at where equipment comes from. A new way of evaluating sustainability in products is the so-called "cradle-to-cradle" design
scheme, which determines how easily and efficiently a product can be re-utilized and/or recycled before it's made. These design considerations optimize the ability to deal with the product
responsibly when its "useful" life is over.

Currently, e-waste generated at the U is processed via the university surplus and salvage department. This department separates anything that still has "utility" from true waste. Usable items are resold, while waste is handled by Guaranteed Recycling Xperts, a company that contracts with the state and local schools to process this e-waste in an environmentally responsible manner."

http://www.dailyutahchronicle.com/news/campus-computing-comes-up-green-1.345643
by: Arthur Raymond

"UC San Diego Campus Computing Goes Green"

"Relocate a college's server computers next to a solar-power generator. Amazingly, we were there to witness how the big companies featured their facilities. And all I could say about the appreciation on how they manage the event organize as well, perfectly planned. As we get inside the conference room, most of the people who were there were USePians. And we know definitely their purpose of being there.. Of course “alam na”.

Since listing and understanding the presented topic were tasked for us to perform, we really bring with us our “black and white”. The presenter of Jupiter System seems like too serious but cool. But who I appreciate more is the second presenter since even he’s quite rush in speaking, he has he power to maintain and develop his skill.

Jupiter System "always considers the client's need”. Here are some of the feature characteristics of the said System that was given by the first presenter of the day:
-CRM
-end to end
-vehicle sales
-vehicle services (upper sale operation)
-back office operation
-financial reporting

The presenter also present to us some of the features fo the system..
CRM features
ERIC DMS- vehicle sales administration

HP THIN client

The next presenter named Leonardo Zapa, the development manager of
the said company HP, gave us an introduction about THIN client that
their company is offering. What does THIN client means??

THIN CLIENT

A thin client is an end to end solution widely used by most of the biggest company all over the world. Compared to the Central Processing Unit, HP THIN client is more secure especially in times when there is an error being encountered. HP THIN client reboot to remove virus since it has a deep freeze solution an dcan auto- save files even without memory.
HP THIN client is the fastest growing client. Since we all know that the more you deploy, the more it's harder for you to handle or secure, therefore, what the THIN is trying to imply is that
having their solution would probably give you the power to rebust.

What THIN client is?
Remote computing architecture
SBC
VDI
Web Client

There were also benefits that THIN Client producing. Therefore, in order for your business to be known, you must envision of of multiplying it.

Owner/ retailer/ industry leadership
-could monitor business in your house

Microsoft Word R&D investment is highest in industry. Here are some manufacturers that being led by the said organization:
• Seven eleven
• Game Stop
• JC Penny
• Mc. Do and many more...

Here are some Customer commitment Benefits:
• Streamline operations
• Improve profit margins
• Build customer loyalty (10% less for student)
• Manage business, not technology (can easily be learned)
• Have a life outside your business

Another RMS by features:
• Inventory control
• Purchase orders
• Pricing sales and promotions
• Sales tracking (sale information)
• Powerful, flexible reports

OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGY

Another presentetion I have witnessed is all about an Open Source Tcechnology. The first time I was exposed to computer, the very first program I have used which satisfies me is the server Mozilla Firefox but by attending the COMDDAP conference, that was just the time that I have realize that the server I am using is one of the widely used open source technology.

Before the discussion about the said topic, the presenter throw a very simple question to his listeners... For your own understanding, what does an open source technology means?? Different answers were given by the listeners. Some says that an open source technology means "source code", some also says it's a "free browser or server", "another says it's a contributor to the client", the last person says it's a "no licensing"... Since all the answers were just an opinion, definitely all were considered as correct but as the discussion has continued to it's deeper meaning, the presenter states that "not all open source technology is -no licensing-" because some has its confidential matter.
During the forum, it was also discussed about Free Software and its different functions. Free Software can be classified as freedom zero, freedom one, freedom two, and freedom three. Freedom three is used to improve such program where all might benefit. Teh freedom two also means the copy of programs being used. And talking about the latter, pardon me for the I haven't list it down since it was dictated so fast.
Open software addressed to ambiguity of free software. It also improves the said software
The presenter also presents some open source technology knowing that some of this were really familiar and perhaps have used.
Who would not be familiar with Ubuntu. Taking back the memories when we were freshmen, a conference was also held at the University of Southeastern Philippines about how Ubuntu functions and discussed some of its function. They even give us a copy of files about their Technology. The next one is the Open Office. Do you know what Open Office means?? Then I pity you if you're not familiar with this ICEANS. The other one is the server which I often discussed at the upper part, the Mozilla Firefox. Next is Thunderbird, followed by the pidguin where the logo seems like a penguin, the GIMPshop, th Transmission, the VLC, th Limewire which is aften use as the music converter for those who were music addict, another is the LAMP, th eDrupal, the Joomla, the Wordpress, the ZenCart, the Ruby on Rails, and the PHP cake. Ideas, knowledge and other teaching at school, office and elsewhere were more dependent in the information provided by the computers. Everyone especially the students most likely rely on the computers whenever they have researches, assignments, and more other helping information that they could get out of surfing the net. The approach, attention and time that people spend in their computers are more of what they could spend with that of the books available at school, and other sources. Aside from computer provides fast, accurate data, it is also known for its capability of securing the files and other stored data. People nowadays would likely to spend most of their time in front of computers and enjoys every second since many things are done by using it. Just like the creations of robots these stuffs makes every chores easier by making themselves the servant of every task. Their job provides faster, cleaner and efficient that a normal person don’t. Expensive though many still prefers having them even if it is expensive.

The availability of the schools facility especially in computer laboratory would surely be of great help to make Philippines famous in the innovative world of technologies. However things works not easy as we thought it would be. Especially that the Philippines still belongs in the 3rd country implying that we still don’t have enough money to support whatever new ideas that one may propose since all of the government’s fund is already budgeted to all of the agencies here in our country. If it so happens that someone high ranking official would like to hear the said proposal it would still be rejected later on because of the lack of budget. This sad reality leads the Filipino inventors to sell their ideas to other countries.

In relation to this, the subject that I opt to suggest is INFORMATION TECNOLOGY TO ROBOTICS aside from being an Information Technology student, this idea came in my mind for I observed that rich countries only promotes the invention of robotics and has the capability to finance it. Though other science and private schools has this, why not make it in all schools? The chances of making new innovative technologies like simple robots would help us Filipino’s ease and save time in doing stuffs that is time taking. The possibility of exhibiting our robot would surely make an investment that would eventually help our economy later on. With the Filipinos creativeness, talent, and wild imaginations the country’s future in robotics would surely be known in the whole world.

This ambitious thinking in letting the Filipinos create futures ideal innovations and other technological advancement is possible if and only if supported by the government.

Computers lead the way in making robots. Without programs robots won’t work as we expected it would be. And since almost of the people depends their daily work in computers, then chances of lists of inventors/innovators is high. Japan- the world’s most influential and leading country when it comes to technology is very rich in robots and other technologies. The Japanese’s creative idea’s and amazing talents makes Japan as successful as it is now in the world. Their annual exhibits of robots AZIMO one of the famous and other technologies is a continuous fact that they don’t stop in every inventions that they make instead they develop it more to make their robots better and better.

Now the challenge is that could we make it?

Or would this idea work? Could possibilities occur with this ambitious plan?
If Japan make it why cant we? As what and who we are in this generation, the knowledge that we have and the power that we gain, the TECHNOLOGY!!
Amazing isn't it if will got to think of it, we were born to witness the advanced technology that the past nation have not experienced. And the best part of it that we could definitely be proud of in our country is that we already applied technology on choosing a leader in an unbiased way of voting since here in our country, Philippines, it has been proposed to have an automated election. Automated election perhaps as what I have said implemented to prevent a dirty election that is frequently happening. Another thing for those illiterate groups of people, they would really choose the automated way since they could easy vote. In short, automated voting is less time consuming because the programmers who proposed it ensures that the result of the election will just take more or less day.

As I am describing the way an automated election is, I would still prefer to have a manual voting since there is a big possibility that automated cheating will be present even how good they were presenting it.

Reminiscing the conference that we have attended last July 2, 2009 at Apo View Hotel, I am one of those participants who didn't go home until the last presenter was done presenting. As the presentation was about to end, one of the evaluator who sits at the back, ask him a simple but uncertain question whether if he would prefer to have an automated election or not. Since I am an IT
student and knowing, in expected he answered "YES, I would allow". Amazingly, knowing the fact that the evaluator is a professional IT analyst, I also expect him to answer in the same way but what happened is indeed an opposite. And his answer made me realize of what is really happening.

I, myself, would prefer follow the manual election as what we are doing during those past years, decades, or even millennium. I've been choosing this one because an automated system proposed in an election has also a big chance in dealing with such biases.

So much for that and before the story goes so far, I would like to differentiate the Manual and Automated election. Yes, it is really easy to vote using an improvised machine the reason why most of the busy persons would prefer voting on that way because they can save more time in doing so.
Definitely there will be no counting since the results of the election would automatically appear on their screens as the whole voters will finally done their job.

If we will go to think deeper, the automated election being proposed to our country, Philippines, is not as effective as the other State is using. Come to think of this one, what if an error has been encountered during the voting process and sited example of this is the absence of energy?? The programmers who also proposed the said kind of electing would also be in great trouble. There is a possibility that any politician will do everything just to win. How the government or even the armed forces be able to manage the said events that might happen?? Does the government could handle and secure the family of those programmers who knows deeper about the said program?? Perhaps, I would just prefer using the automated one if the proposal will be discussed and satisfied by the presenter to us, the country that they were trying to implement their programs with. The group of people who have decided to apply the automated election must consider the people around them.

Facing this kind of problems, I rather choose the manual election as what we have used to. Since using this kind of election, people would really determine, monitor and witness the election. At least, if there will be an unnecessary transaction that might happen, people could manipulate and control the situation.

Yes, I am an Information Technology student and must believe on the technology being offered, but what it reflects to me is the realization being stated to us during the COMDDAP event. We didn't even know how the system will function especially taking the first time. What would their thinking be?? Are they going to make this coming election an example or a try for what they have done??

Election is not a game...Election holds our life for about a decade maybe; therefore, we must be practical.

For sure, we all know how dirty the elections happened every electing time. We, even SK voters, witnessed the griminess of politics. Is this usual happening
the one which they were trying to prevent?? Well, even how you try to prevent this kind of situation, if the rivals you were trying to defeat are really powerful, there's nothing you can do about it. Even applying the automated election would not help the government for it to bring to an end. There will be a big opportunity and chances for the politicians to play in a dirty way since
they could buy or even study the said system by simply just showing the best amount that they could offer.

In partnership with Smartmatic Auditable Election System or SAES, it has been proven that it is fully- automated, completely secure and reliable. Proven under the accurate examination of independent international monitors in several national and regional elections, Smartmatic Auditable Election System has distinguished itself as the system away from accusation.

“The powerful combination of robust hardware, secure software and highly qualified personnel enables the SAES system to guarantee elections that voters can trust, in any part of the world. From its voting machines that feature a variety of vote input devices, customizable interfaces and printed voter receipts, to its secure data transmission networks, high-end tallying servers, immediate results tabulation and fully auditable paper trail, the SAES technological platform is the only end-to–end system available that ensures democracy rules, cost effectively.” - http://www.smartmatic.com/solutions/automated-election-system/single-view/article/the-new-standard-of-modern-democracy/

If the partnership of Smartmatic Auditable Election System and Automated Election will continue, as one of those Filipino who’s still hoping for a fair election, I definitely support the said way. The first step I did is to look for a company that would fit for the information that our group would share to my fellow classmates. But how could I conduct an interview without a
letter, and the letter must be first approved by your Facilitator,
Dean, and the OSS director. If we’d come to think of it again, we could definitely state that it's not an easy task because doing it is really hard. Manager might not accept the said proposal because there is a possibility that the IS Manager think that it is one of strategy for us to have our coppied system from them. The trust of the company regarding their system to be given to us, as a student, would be really hard for them, that why we really have to pass/ submit an evidence that will prove that we were approved by the school. But what’s hard in
doing this task is the time you’ve done asking permission of approval
for the chosen company and as the time you’ll visit the company, you’ll
be rejected. Upon accepting the fact of rejection, since some other
company let some of their information be confidential, we need to
submit another company proposal for another approval for us to conduct
another interview on the other company. Well, just on this part, we
could definitely say that it’s really hard.

As we talk about the experiences we’ve got, same as what we did from the other subject (HRM), we propossed a company named TEFASCO. We went there but one of their staff told us that we could only conduct an interview if we were approved by their company, one of their respected employee told us that they don't have a steady programmer and no can probably support us on our interview because what their company is doing is that they just call a programmer from outside the country for them to have one. Another thing is that, their President is currently out of the country, the big possibility is that we can’t have the information for the said subject in the said time if we’ll going to wait for their president. And so our
next option is to visit any company just near our residences and ask if
we could conduct an interview before making a proposal to assure that
we could really make an interview.

Yes, we indeed visit companies and ask about our tasks. What we got is that we have
conducted an interview but the company hasn’t enough information since
their main company is in Manila. Our last option is to travel Tagum
knowing that there’s a big opportunity that we could conduct an interview. And as what have we planned, we first submit a company proposal that might be located at Tagum City. Fortunately, our facilitator approved it and we prepared ourselves for the trip.

Talking about the company, we have chosen JS Gaisano as our company to
be interviewed. Luckily, as we went there, we were entertained and
supported our list of questions.

JS Gaisano, located at
Quirante Dos, Tagum City is the company we have chosen for us to make our group sharing as well as our individual assignment.

What we have discovered is that the JS GAISANO is still improvising their system since as what they have shared to us is the system responsible for bar code scanning.

What the IS Manager have shared information to us is on how they are trying their best to inhace their system with the help of programmers who's contunuously proposing more ideas about how to improve their system.

Since JS Gaisano is
a competitive mall and known to be one of the best selling companies
not just over Tagum but also in Kapalong and Santo Tomas, the IS Manager is looking forward for the best proposed system that they might encountered. As what the consultant have told us, "if possible they could have it sooner". Many have been proposing a system to them but they find the proposal not that convenient or shall we say, it didn't reached their expectations, needs, and wants. So programmers who are interested there, why not trying to propose a good programs or even a system to them.

Here are some rules and responsibilities
being shared by the consultant on us about the Information System. An applicant is needed to be recruited in order to achieve
the first step on being an IS Manager. And for them to have this, one should be an expert.

Information System also has its multi- tasking abilities but from time to time they
consider their situation quite improving compared to their situation the year have passed.

Having an Information System is a great advantage for them since it would definitely help their employee minimize their work knowing they are in need of man power. Having perhaps a good system, the company would find their work not that hard. The need of man power would be lessen since some of the workers might not be needed anymore bcause there are now technologies that will support their needs. The disadvantage of the system they have right now is that it not so improvised therefore, the files might not be controled especially if there will be a current problem. Another one is that they are still using the older version of computers. But JS Gaisano ensures that the planned has been imposed and expecting all expectations to be achieved to serve people properly.

Now I could proudly say that we really went to Tagum just to conduct an
interview. We have waisted a lot of money just to have this
information. And having this information makes me feel really good. huhuh, Thank God.

Thanks for visiting my site by the way.. And the one who’s responsible on maintaining the company’s employees is the HR manager.

On hiring good employees, the HR Manager must really be strict upon implementing the company’s rules and regulation. During the first day, employee must really wear their complete uniform. They must really fix themselves accordingly. The boys were expected to have a fixed hair (but not in skinned head) as the time they were going to enter the Mall. And for the girls, the hair must properly be cut in a shoulder level and must really wear their make- ups for them to become more presentable especially those who were assigned publicly. Uniform for both girls and boys must strictly be checked by their custodians if it is cut or even sew properly for it might reflect on the quality that a customer were looking for. On the second day, employee must show their own basic selling technique and this would be classified as their capability on best selling, showing their good characteristics, and most especially their good knowledge. After due processes of conducting rules, here’s the time that the company itself will decide whether the employee will be deployed or not. A regular of 2 days exposure and 6 days of On Job Training (OJT) will be implemented for them to be considered as who passed the training and considered to have a contract for the company..

Upon paying their employees, the HR Manager ensure how competitive enough their company is paying them since JS Gaisano Tagum acts as the center branch of JS Gaisano with their other branches located at Kapalong and Sto.Tomas.

Since JS Gaisano is a competitive mall and known to be one of the best selling companies not just over Tagum but also in Kapalong and Santo Tomas, the HR Manager manages the standards of their applicants. The consultant admitted that in order for an applicant to get hired, she/he must have the good height, beauty, and most especially the attitude upon dealing their customers. Like any other company, JS Gaisano has their typical verbal warnings those employees who got late on arriving. But the consultant also admits that they have a minimum man power the reason why they can’t easily fired them as long as each of them has an acceptable reasons.

Here are some rules and responsibilities being shared by the consultant on us about the Human Resource Management. An employee is needed to be recruited in order to achieve the first step on being an HR Manager. She is the one who has the responsibilities on keeping the company’s reports and records. They wear their proper uniform in working hours. Ensures to supply the needs of the custodians in order for them work properly. And to maintain their daily time tracking or the hours that she/ he’s in the work.

Human Resource has its multi- tasking abilities but from time to time they consider their situation to have a shortage of man power.

Having an HR manager is a great advantage for them since there would be responsible on maintaining their ability to work properly and accordingly. She’s one who is also responsible on keeping track if ever there is shortage or more than enough payments. She’s also the one who’s responsible for on ensuring the health of her employees. And also the one who is responsible for keeping records such as their residences, good records, good standing, and more information about their employee’s profile. But as far as she knows, she hasn’t seen any problem to consider as disadvantage on managing human resource.

Another advantage given being an HR Manager and regular is that, they will be accepting complete benefits. Their Company considers Holiday Seasons as their Big Season since this is the time were families, group of friends, and any other shoppers go and shop, the reason why they were open even if holidays. According to the law also, there will be 30 percent to be given to those special employees who works on special days and 100 percent or double payment would be given to those employees who are regular.

And talking about how they fires employees, each of them will be given a thirty days noticed and also implements lay off.

Now I could proudly say that we really went to Tagum just to conduct an interview. Open source software engineering is an area of information technology that already has radically altered the way we develop, market, and service software and the way the software industry collaborates in the 21st century. Open source software products play a critical role in the nation’s economy and in supporting the nation’s infrastructure. NC State is fortuitously situated in the midst of open source giants Red Hat and IBM and is poised to take a leadership position in open source software engineering.

"The development and use of open source software is growing rapidly around the world," said Tom Rabon, Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs at Red Hat, Inc. and a member of the COSE Advisory Board. “By creating the Center for Open Source Engineering, North Carolina State University is positioning itself to become one of the preeminent locations for open source competency. We are pleased to support the creation of the center."

"The evolution and mainstreaming of open source software depends on continued examination and study by developers, researchers and students," said Bob Sutor, IBM's Vice President of Open Source and Standards. "As a longtime supporter of open standards and open source technologies, IBM commends NC State's efforts to drive innovation in this important area with its ambitious Center for Open Software Engineering."

The COSE will initiate a series of efforts designed to deepen the understanding of the technical aspects of open source software development, enhance the quality of open source software engineering education, and improve the exchange of information between researchers, educators, and open source practitioners in North Carolina and across the nation. The first of these efforts will be the establishment of a series of invited talks by local and national leaders in the research, development and adoption of open source software. The series will commence in the Fall 2007 semester and will be open to the public.

Other initiatives include:
•    The unification of a research group that studies open source software development comprehensively throughout the software development lifecycle, collaborating with open source practitioners;
•    The development of freely-available educational resources related to open source software engineering;
• The creation of a portal for research results related to open source software engineering; and
• The creation of a web community where educators can collaborate on choosing open source software that may be suitable for enhancement by students in a class. Educators can also contribute additional projects that might be more suitable for providing an open source experience for beginning students than those posted on popular sites, such as sourceforge.

Located in state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities on Centennial Campus, the COSE will be directed by Dr. Laurie Williams, an associate professor in the Computer Science at NC State University. Williams is a leading software engineering researcher, known for her work in agile software development, reliability, testing, and security, and is a former IBM employee. Seven other faculty in the department will lead developments in research and teaching of open source software engineering. Industrial partnerships have already been established with ABB, IBM, and Red Hat; representatives of these companies comprise the COSE advisory board. The COSE is actively seeking additional industrial affiliates interested in the engineering and adoption of open source software.

"We are thrilled to start the Center for Open Software Engineering and are excited about the potential of establishing a center of competency around the technical aspects of open source software development and adoption. We are fortunate to be able to collaborate with the giants in the domain," said Williams. "Open source software development is a case where the state-of-the-practice in industry is leading and research and education is lagging. The long term vision of the center is to trump industry and lead the state-of-the-art research and education in open source software development. ”

For more information about the activities of the Center for Open Software Engineering, visit the center’s website or contact the center’s director, Dr. Laurie Williams.

Information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) leadership roles have undergone fundamental changes over the past decade. Despite increased interest in recent years, little empirical research on IS/IT leadership roles has been done. This paper presents a literature review and results from a survey in Norway. The survey collected data on general leadership roles such as informational role, decisional role and interpersonal role, as well as on IS/IT leadership roles such as chief architect, change leader, product developer, technology provocateur, coach and chief operating strategist. The empirical analysis indicates that strategic responsibilities as well as network stage of growth influence the extent of informational role, while the extent to which the chief executive uses IT influences the extent of decisional role, and the extent to which subordinates use IT influence the extent of interpersonal role. IS/IT managers with greater operating responsibility will be chief architects. The role of a change leader is positively influenced by the number of years in IT, the extent of IT use, the extent of strategic responsibility and the organization's revenue, while it is negatively influenced by the number of years in the current position. Product developer can be predicted by strategic responsibility and chief executive's IT use, while technology provocateur can be predicted by the extent of IT use, coach can be predicted by the extent of subordinates' IT use, and chief operating strategist can be predicted by the extent of strategic responsibility. Although several significant predictors of IS/IT leadership roles were identified in this research, the search for more significant predictors should continue in future research.

The Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) was organized in 1971 and presently maintains its headquarters in Washington, DC.
IICL is active in governmental, regulatory, customs, tax, educational, technological and environmental fields.
IICL was instrumental in the development of the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), the international agreement for maintaining containers in safe condition, the Approved Continuous Examination Programmes (ACEP), and of the Harmonized Interpretation of the CSC with the International Maritime Organization.

COSE Website: http://research.csc.ncsu.edu/cose/index.php

Mintzberg: The Managerial Roles

Mintzberg (1973) groups managerial activities and roles as involving:

Managerial activities:
1. interpersonal roles - arising from formal authority and status and supporting the information and decision activities.
associated roles:
• figurehead
• liaison
• leader

2. information processing roles
associated roles:
• monitor
• disseminator
• spokesman

3. decision roles: making significant decisions
associated roles:
• improver/changer
• disturbance handler
• resource allocator
• negotiator

The broad proposition is that, as a senior manager enacts his/her role, these will come together as a gestalt (integrated whole) reflecting the manager's competencies associated with the roles. In a sense therefore they act as evaluation criteria for assessing the performance of a manager in his/her role.

1. Figurehead.
Social, inspirational, legal and ceremonial duties must be carried out. The manager is a symbol and must be on-hand for people/agencies that will only deal with him/her because of status and authority.

2. The leader role
This is at the heart of the manager-subordinate relationship and managerial power and pervasive where subordinates are involved even where perhaps the relationship is not directly interpersonal. The manager
• defines the structures and environments within which sub-ordinates work and are motivated.
• oversees and questions activities to keep them alert.
• selects, encourages, promotes and disciplines.
• tries to balance subordinate and organisational needs for efficient operations.

3. Liaison:
This is the manager as an information and communication centre. It is vital to build up favours. Networking skills to shape maintain internal and external contacts for information exchange are essential. These ontacts give access to "databases"- facts, requirements, probabilities.

4. As 'monitor'
- the manager seeks/receives information from many sources to evaluate the organisation's performance, well-being and situation. Monitoring of internal operations, external events, ideas, trends, analysis and pressures is vital. Information to detect changes, problems & opportunities and to construct decision-making scenarios can be current/historic, tangible (hard) or soft, documented or non-documented.This role is about building and using an intelligence system. The manager must install and maintain this information system; by building contacts & training staff to deliver "information".

5. As disseminator
- the manager brings external views into his/her organisation and facilitiates internal information flows between subordinates (factual or value-based).
The preferences of significant people are received and assimilated. The manager interprets/disseminates information to subordinates e.g. policies, rules, regulations. Values are also desseminated via conversations laced with imperatives and signs/icons about what is regarded as imprtant or what 'we believe in'.
There is a dilemma of delegation. Only the manager has the data for many decisions and often in the wrong form (verbal/memory vs. paper). Sharing is time-consuming and difficult. He/she and staff may be already overloaded. Communication consumes time. The adage 'if you want to get things done, (it is best to do it yourself' comes to mind. Why might this be a driver of managerial behaviour (reluctance or constraints on the ability to delegate)?

6. As spokesman (P.R. capacity)
- the manager informs and lobbies others (external to his/her own organisational group). Key influencers and stakeholders are kept informed of performances, plans & policies. For outsiders, the manager is an expert in the field in which his/her organisation operates.

7. A senior manager is responsible for his/her organisation's strategy-making system - generating and linking important decisions. He/she has the authority, information and capacity for control and integration over important decisions.
As initiator/changer
- he/she designs and initiates much of the controlled change in the organization. Gaps are identified, improvement programmes defined. The manager initiates a series of related decisions/activities to achieve actual improvement. Improvement projects may be involved at various levels. The manager can

1. delegate all design responsibility selecting and even replace subordinates.
2. empower subordinates with responsbility for the design of the improvement programme but e.g. define the parameters/limits and veto or give the go-ahead on options.
3. supervise design directly.
Senior managers may have many projects at various development stages (emergent/dormant/nearly-ready) working on each periodically interspersed by waiting periods for information feedback or progress etc. Projects roll-on and roll-off,

8. the disturbance handler
- is a generalist role i.e. taking charge when the organisation hits an iceberg unexpectedly and where there is no clear programmed response. Disturbances may arise from staff, resources, threats or because others make mistakes or innovation has unexpected consequences. The role involves stepping in to calm matters, evaluate, re-allocate, support - removing the thorn - buying time. The metaphors here are
If you are up to your backside in alligators it is no use talking about draining the swamp.
and
Stop the bleeding as only then can you take care of the long term health of the patient. (not Mintzberg's anecdote)

9. As resource allocator
- the manager oversees allocation of all resources (£, staff, reputation). This involves:
0. scheduling own time
1. programming work
2. authorising actions

With an eye to the diary (scheduling) the manager implicitly sets organizational priorities. Time and access involve opportunity costs. What fails to reach him/her, fails to get support.
The managerial task is to ensure the basic work system is in place and to programme staff overloads - what to do, by whom, what processing structures will be used.
Authorizing major decisions before implementation is a control over resource allocation. This enables coordinative interventions e.g. authorization within a policy or budgeting process in comparison to ad-hoc interventions. With limited time, complex issues and staff proposals that cannot be dismissed lightly, the manager may decide on the proposer rather than proposal.
To help evaluation processes, managers develop models and plans in their heads (they construe the relationships and signifiers in the situation). These models/constructions encompass rules, imperatives, criteria and preferences to evaluate proposals against. Knowing his rules for almost two years, student must really manage themselves before entering the class, wearing complete uniform and arriving to school as early as possible. And the first day of meeting have reached my expectation.

Here comes the first day of meeting. We were taught about how our taken subject, MIS, have been produced and developed. MIS means Management Information System. Management, as we all know, refers to the person or people who perform the act(s) of planning, directing, organizing, and even controlling a group of people. And in addition of what we all know, we have been informed that a person can never manage a person itself since every human being has its own feeling and desire. The next one is all about Information System (IS) which refers to a system of people, data, records and activities that process the data and information in an organization. With this meaning, we would definitely come into realization that Information System is all about Hardware, Software, and Peopleware. Therefore, if we're going to sum it up, MIS would be better understood as Management Hardware, Software, and Peopleware.

We’ve almost done with our discussion when suddenly our instructor, Mr. Randy Gamboa, provided us an underlying question that every one of us would really come to think. Does the subject description Management Information System fits to be a subject? Or shall we say, do Management Information System is an accurate description to be accepted as a subject?

A person, as we have advised, can never manage nor dictate a person or an individual however the subject description says Management Hardware, Software, and Peopleware. To be exact, it could also be a Peopleware where people manage people. In my deep understanding about what our instructor was trying to imply is that Management Information System is not the right term to be deployed as a subject description. For me, it should be MIT or must be PMIT which means People Management Information Technology. But this conclusion is just an accordance of what I have understood.

Talking about the environment, it’s totally hot, and visualizing our situation there every afternoon is such a horrible thing. However, despite of this cruel situation, it’s so nice to think that our discussion would lead not to drag the environment in. Our instructor managed to take the discussion alive because, regardless of how strict our instructor is; Mr. Randy S. Gamboa has always a unique way of teaching us. And one more thing is to think that my classmates were always cheerful enough to handle things into at ease.
